The AI Diffusion Rule - Nvidia suffers
Nvidia’s stock is swinging as the U.S. rolls out the AI Diffusion Rule on May 15, putting strict limits on where advanced AI chips and models can be sold. Countries are now split into tiers, some get full access, others get limited chips, and some (like China and Russia) get none.
This could hit Nvidia’s global sales hard, especially with 50% of its revenue coming from outside the U.S. To stay ahead, Nvidia’s doubling down on R&D, diversifying its supply chain, and focusing on Tier 1 countries. It’s a bumpy ride, but Nvidia’s not backing down.
Anthropic’s new Claude for Education
Anthropic just launched Claude for Education, a new AI chatbot designed for colleges and universities. It’s built to teach, not just tell. The standout feature? A “Learning Mode” that guides students to think critically instead of handing out answers. It can help write research papers, solve math problems, and even give feedback on essays. Faculty and staff can use it for grading, analyzing data, and making policies more readable.
Schools like Northeastern and LSE are already on board. With partnerships in place and a focus on collaboration, Claude is stepping up as a serious rival to ChatGPT in the classroom.
Meta's Head of AI Research Resigns
Joelle Pineau, Meta’s Head of AI Research, is stepping down at the end of May after 8 impactful years. She led the FAIR team, championed open-source AI, and helped launch Meta’s Llama models. Her exit comes just before Meta’s first LlamaCon and raises questions about the future of its open, ethical AI strategy.
While Pineau returns to teaching at McGill University, Meta’s still charging ahead, pouring up to $65 billion into AI this year, building massive data centers, and aiming to run over 1.3 million GPUs. Her successor will have big shoes to fill during a crucial time for Meta's AI push.
